A Technical Introduction to Shanghai ChiMay’s 4-in-1 Multi-Parameter Sensor: pH, Conductivity, ORP and Temperature in a Single 180mm Probe Body

The Engineering Challenge of Multi-Parameter Measurement

Water quality monitoring has traditionally meant one instrument per parameter: separate probe bodies, separate cables, separate signal conditioning, separate installation points.

That works when measurements are independent of each other and timing precision does not matter. It stops working the moment you want to correlate parameters for a digital twin, feed an edge AI model, or close a control loop. Four probes in four locations, sampled by four devices on four clocks, do not produce correlated data. They produce four datasets that have to be reconciled after the fact — and the reconciliation is where the information gets lost.

Shanghai ChiMay’s 4-in-1 Multi-Parameter Sensor takes a different approach: pH, conductivity, ORP and temperature measured inside a single 180mm probe body, with all four values returned over one Modbus RTU/TCP channel. Same location, same instant, one timestamp. Four parameters. One probe. Zero alignment error.

The rest of this article covers how each measurement works and how the integration is put together.

Measurement Technology for Each Parameter

pH Measurement

pH uses a glass-membrane electrode with automatic temperature compensation. The glass membrane develops a potential proportional to hydrogen ion activity, converted to pH units through the Nernst equation.

The detail worth noting is where the temperature comes from. Because temperature is measured in the same body, compensation uses the temperature of the same water the glass membrane is sitting in. Separate pH and temperature probes measure slightly different water — one near a wall, one in the flow — and that difference becomes a compensation error that nobody can see in the output.

Specifications: accuracy ±0.02 pH, range 0-14 pH, T90 under 30 seconds. That covers water treatment, aquaculture, industrial process and environmental monitoring without gaps.

Conductivity Measurement

Conductivity uses a 4-electrode cell, which removes the polarisation error inherent in 2-electrode designs. Outer electrodes apply an AC excitation; inner electrodes measure the resulting current. Because the measurement does not depend on polarisation behaviour at the electrodes, it holds up across the full practical range — from ultrapure water below 1 µS/cm to seawater above 50,000 µS/cm.

The integrated temperature sensor compensates to a 25°C reference using a configurable coefficient, typically 0.019-0.022 per °C for natural waters. That removes the roughly 2% per °C temperature dependence, which otherwise makes a raw conductivity reading almost meaningless without knowing the water temperature at the moment of measurement.

ORP Measurement

ORP uses a noble metal electrode — platinum or gold — that develops a potential proportional to the oxidation-reduction state of the water. Positive mV indicates an oxidising environment with disinfection capacity; negative mV indicates reducing conditions, biological activity or chemical reducing agents.

In the 4-in-1 design the ORP electrode shares a reference junction with the pH electrode. Fewer wetted interfaces means fewer places for fouling and diffusion potential problems to develop, and simpler maintenance. Automatic temperature compensation handles the temperature dependence of the ORP equilibria.

Temperature Measurement

Temperature comes from a platinum RTD with ±0.1°C accuracy, positioned inside the probe body so it measures the same water volume sampled by the pH, conductivity and ORP electrodes. Every compensation term in the other three measurements comes from that one element.

Integration Architecture

Single-Probe, Multi-Parameter Output

All four parameters are returned over a single Modbus RTU connection on an RS-485 bus. Each parameter occupies its own register, so one request retrieves all four values in one transaction.

That single transaction is the whole point for twin and control applications. Four values, one timestamp, no polling skew.

For installations that need analog, the sensor provides 4-20mA output per parameter. On new builds the digital output is the better choice: it preserves the measurement resolution and allows remote configuration.

Calibration and Maintenance

Two things get simpler with the integrated design. All four measuring elements share one installation point, so removing the probe for service touches all four parameters at once. And cleaning, verification and replacement become one maintenance event instead of four.

Calibration intervals differ by parameter: pH 2-point calibration every 1-3 months, conductivity 1-point every 3-6 months, ORP periodic verification against a known standard, and temperature verification annually against a factory set.

Environmental Protection

The probe body carries IP68 for continuous submersion, in chemical-resistant materials — typically PVDF or PEEK — that tolerate treated water, industrial process streams, saltwater and aggressive chemical environments. The cable has a UV-resistant jacket for outdoor installation and integral strain relief for mechanical reliability over years of service.

Application Alignment

The case for integration is strongest where the relationship between parameters carries more information than the parameters individually.

Municipal treatment: pH, conductivity, ORP and temperature together indicate source water changes, treatment chemical effectiveness and distribution system condition — including the corrosion-control picture that lead and copper compliance depends on.

Aquaculture: all four matter to fish health. pH drives ammonia toxicity, conductivity indicates dissolved mineral content, ORP tracks biological activity, and temperature sets metabolic rate.

Industrial process: multi-parameter monitoring catches contamination events, process upsets and equipment failures that single-parameter monitoring registers as a mystery.

Environmental monitoring: correlated data helps identify pollution sources and transport pathways, which single-parameter data cannot distinguish.

Data Output Architecture and Protocol Options

Modbus RTU Configuration

In a standard Modbus RTU network, multiple 4-in-1 sensors share one RS-485 bus. Each sensor takes a unique address from 1 to 247, and a master controller polls them at configurable intervals — every 1-10 seconds for digital twin work, every 30-60 seconds for routine monitoring. A single bus can address 247 devices, though practical segments usually carry 10-30 sensors to keep communication speed sane.

Each poll returns pH, conductivity, ORP and temperature in one message. That is what eliminates cross-parameter timing error: separate sensors polled individually are never sampled at the same moment.

Modbus TCP Configuration

Where IP communication is preferred, Modbus TCP connects the sensor directly to an Ethernet network. That removes RS-485-to-IP converters from the architecture and lets sensors talk to cloud platforms, edge gateways and SCADA over standard network infrastructure.

Edge AI Integration

Correlated multi-parameter output is what makes edge inference worthwhile. A model trained on synchronous data can separate scenarios that look identical in any single channel: a simultaneous pH drop and conductivity rise suggests a specific contamination source, while a pH drop on its own usually means CO2 from biological activity. The model can act on the difference — but only if the inputs were measured at the same point, at the same time.

Shanghai ChiMay’s integrated design provides exactly that. Four parameters. One probe. Zero alignment error.

Installation and Commissioning

Mounting Options

  • Direct immersion: the probe is inserted through a ball valve or isolation valve, so it can be removed for service without draining the line
  • Flow cell installation: for applications needing controlled measurement conditions, the probe mounts in a flow cell diverting a representative sample
  • Submersion mounting: for open tanks and channels, the probe hangs from a bracket with the measurement elements submerged

Commissioning Procedure

Three steps: physical installation and cable connection, Modbus address configuration, calibration verification. pH needs 2-point calibration (typically pH 4.01 and 7.00 buffers), conductivity needs 1-point against a standard solution, ORP needs verification against a reference solution. Temperature is factory-calibrated and verified annually.

After calibration the sensor outputs all four parameters over Modbus and is ready for the monitoring or control system. Typical commissioning time is 30-60 minutes per sensor.

Lifecycle Considerations

The design target is multi-year deployment with predictable maintenance. The pH glass electrode typically holds accuracy for 12-24 months in most water applications before replacement. The conductivity electrodes are solid-state and do not normally require replacement. The ORP electrode holds stable performance with periodic cleaning. The temperature RTD has no wear mechanism.

Buy the sensor, own the outcome. We quote 5-year cost, not just unit price. The five-year TCO framework accounts for electrode replacement, calibration consumables and maintenance labour — all reduced by a design that shares one probe body and one maintenance event across four parameters.

Supply and Support

Shanghai ChiMay maintains 5-8 working day lead times for the 4-in-1 Multi-Parameter Sensor. CE marking, ISO calibration certificates and test reports are included. Tier-1 performance, without Tier-1 lead time.
